Planning & Zoning Division

Responsibilities

Planning and Zoning is a division of the Department of Community and Economic Development. The division is responsible for all functions related to the city's land use planning program, including:
  • Administration of the Unified Development Ordinance
  • Annexation
  • Environmental review
  • Long range and current planning
  • Subdivision and development of land
  • Zoning
New Development in Faribault
The city's Comprehensive Plan and Unified Development Ordinance (zoning and subdivision ordinances) are used by the division to ensure that development in Faribault meets the goals and objectives established by the City Council through input by members of the community.

Duties

Planning and Zoning serves as primary staff liaison to the Planning Commission and Development Review Committee, as well as other ad hoc committees addressing other land use and zoning topics. Specific division activities include:
  • Analyzing policy, regulations, and standards and developing associated recommendations
  • Conducting research and preparing reports
  • Coordinating the Development Review Process
  • Providing information to the public
  • Working with developers, property owners, and business owners
